5 Filipino-owned Small Businesses to support for Filipino-American History Month
As a Filipino-American myself, I always get so excited to discover that a small business I come across is Filipino-owned, and I know that’s an experience that’s not unique to me. Here are a few Filipino-owned businesses I’ve been following that deserve a little love!
Katrina Romulo’s Print Shop
The ever-so-talented LA-based designer @edgykatrina just opened up her first print shop, filled with design featuring a mix of humorous and hopeful sayings. ”At its core my work celebrates people and play,” she says on her shop website. “I want to remind everyone that they are enough, no matter how easy it is to get lost in comparison or always want more. ”
Woman in Stems
Woman in Stems is a floral design studio rooted in Xira Doctor’s personal passion for flowers. As a queer Filipina born and raised in Los Angeles, Xira uses these experiences to create floral concoctions filled with beauty and wonder.
LETTI New York
LETTI — a small queer, Filipino-owned business in the US — is an ode to the founder’s late lola (grandmother) who was “feisty with a whole lotta heart.” Leading with courage, grit, and vigor, LETTI wants to spread love toward marginalized communities and the planet while empowering likeminded people through their craftsmanship.
Maari
Since 2016, Maaari has honored Filipino artisans by curating and creating jewelry, wearables, and other goods and bringing them to an audience that can honor these pieces and their culture. Even from a glance at their website or Instagram, you can see how thoughtful they are in bringing together pieces that show a deep appreciation for modern design, Philippine culture, and the artisans behind them.
Purple Potions Coffee
Purple Potions Coffee gives ube (purple yam) lovers a way to enjoy the globally beloved flavor in their coffee or matcha drinks with their ube syrup. Their pandan and banana cue syrups also feature other traditional Filipino flavors that haven’t quite gotten as caught up in international trends, but are still just as deserving!
